RESUMEN

Massive gene expression analyses are widely used to find differentially expressed genes under specific conditions. The results of these experiments are often available in public databases that are undergoing a growth similar to that of molecular sequence databases in the past. This now allows novel secondary computational tools to emerge that use such information to gain new knowledge. If several genes have a similar expression profile across heterogeneous transcriptomics experiments, they could be functionally related. These associations are usually useful for the annotation of uncharacterized genes. In addition, the search for genes with opposite expression profiles is useful for finding negative regulators and proposing inhibitory compounds in drug repurposing projects. Here we present a new web application, Automatic and Serial Analysis of CO-expression (ASACO), which has the potential to discover positive and negative correlator genes to a given query gene, based on thousands of public transcriptomics experiments. In addition, examples of use are presented, comparing with previous contrasted knowledge. The results obtained propose ASACO as a useful tool to improve knowledge about genes associated with human diseases and noncoding genes. ASACO is available at http://www.bioinfocabd.upo.es/asaco/.

Previous data revealed the unexpected presence of genes encoding for long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) biosynthetic enzymes in transcriptomes from freshwater gammarids but not in marine species, even though closely related species were compared. This study aimed to clarify the origin and occurrence of selected LC-PUFA biosynthesis gene markers across all published gammarid transcriptomes. Through systematic searches, we confirmed the widespread occurrence of sequences from seven elongases and desaturases involved in LC-PUFA biosynthesis, in transcriptomes from freshwater gammarids but not marine species, and clarified that such occurrence is independent from the gammarid species and geographical origin. The phylogenetic analysis established that the retrieved elongase and desaturase sequences were closely related to bdelloid rotifers, confirming that multiple transcriptomes from freshwater gammarids contain contaminating rotifers' genetic material. Using the Adineta steineri genome, we investigated the genomic location and exon-intron organization of the elongase and desaturase genes, establishing they are all genome-anchored and, importantly, identifying instances of horizontal gene transfer. Finally, we provide compelling evidence demonstrating Bdelloidea desaturases and elongases enable these organisms to perform all the reactions for de novo biosynthesis of PUFA and, from them, LC-PUFA, an advantageous trait when considering the low abundance of these essential nutrients in freshwater environments.

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis from the Poxviridae family that spreads at an unprecedented rate. It is transmitted through contact with skin lesions, respiratory droplets, body fluids, and sexual contact. The diverse presentation of the disease leads to misdiagnosis. Thus, clinicians should have a high index of suspicion, mainly with diseases with skin lesions. The most vulnerable group to developing this disease are individuals with risky sexual relationships, sexually transmitted infections, or human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). To date, only one case of coinfection with the monkeypox virus, syphilis, and HIV has been reported; however, no cases have been revealed in the Mexican territory. Herein we describe an unusual case of syphilis-monkeypox coinfection in an immunocompromised patient; despite his coinfection, he had a favorable prognosis. Furthermore, we attach allusive pictures of the natural evolution of dermatological lesions.

The vertiginous advance for identifying the genomic sequence of SARS-CoV-2 allowed the development of a vaccine including mRNA-based vaccines, inactivated viruses, protein subunits, and adenoviral vaccines such as Sputnik. This study aims to report on autoimmune disease manifestations that occurred following COVID-19 Sputnik vaccination. Patients and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients with new-onset autoimmune diseases induced by a post-COVID-19 vaccine between March 2021 and December 2022, in two referral hospitals in Mexico City and Argentina. The study evaluated patients who received the Sputnik vaccine and developed recent-onset autoimmune diseases. Results: Twenty-eight patients developed recent-onset autoimmune diseases after Sputnik vaccine. The median age was 56.9 ± 21.7 years, with 14 females and 14 males. The autoimmune diseases observed were neurological in 13 patients (46%), hematological autoimmune manifestations occurred in 12 patients (42%), with thrombotic disease observed in 10 patients (28%), and autoimmune hemolytic anemia in two patients (7.1%). Rheumatological disorders were present in two patients (7.1%), and endocrine disorders in one patient (3.5%). Principio del formulario Conclusion: Although the COVID-19 Sputnik vaccine is generally safe, it can lead to adverse effects. Thrombosis and Guillain-Barre were the most frequent manifestations observed in our group of patients.

In this study, we investigated the concentration, distribution, and characteristics of neustonic MPs in the Canary Islands, with a particular focus on the island leeward zones, where a high accumulation of floating marine microplastics is expected. Samples were collected with a manta net at 15 different sites from Alegranza to La Gomera during the IMPLAMAC expedition. The microplastic concentration in surface waters ranged from 0.27 MPs/m3 in Alegranza to 136.7 MPs/m3 in the south of Gran Canaria. The highest concentration of MPs found was due to the presence of a sea-surface slick, also called "marine litter windrow", formed in the south of Gran Canaria. The most abundant zooplankton group in the neuston was copepods, except at the marine litter windrow where fish larvae and eggs predominated. This indicates that coastal areas where marine litter windrows are formed have a high risk of MP ingestion and potential adverse effects on biota.

The chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids (CLIPPERS) and autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) were described a decade ago. There are a limited number of reports and these diseases are still underdiagnosed. We presented a 35 years-old patient with clinical manifestations of cerebellum affection and enhancement in the MRI, with the influenza vaccine as the only triggering factor. Infectious diseases, malignancy, and additional systemic involvement were ruled out; therefore, on suspicion of CLIPPERS syndrome, the patient received corticosteroid therapy with an adequate response. The knowledge of CLIPPERS syndrome as an unusual ASIA presentation and high response to the corticosteroids may lead to a timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and follow up with better outcomes for patients.

La inflamación linfocítica crónica con realce perivascular pontino que responde a los esteroides (CLIPPERS) y el síndrome autoinmune/inflamatorio inducido por adyuvantes (ASIA) se describieron hace una década. Hay un número limitado de reportes y estas enfermedades aún están infra diagnosticadas.Presentamos un paciente de 35 años con cuadro clínico de afectación del cerebelo y realce en la RM, con la vacuna anti-influenza como único factor desencadenante.Se descartaron enfermedades infecciosas, malignidad y afectación sistémica, por lo tanto, ante sospecha de síndrome de CLIPPERS, recibió tratamiento con corticoesteroides con una respuesta adecuada.El conocimiento del síndrome de CLIPPERS como una presentación inusual de ASIA y su alta respuesta a los corticosteroides puede conducir a un diagnóstico oportuno, un tratamiento adecuado y un seguimiento con mejores resultados para los pacientes.(AU)

BACKGROUND: European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines for the management of acute coronary syndromes in patients presenting without persistent ST-segment elevation (NSTEMI) recommend Intensive Care Unit (ICU) surveillance during the first 24-48 h. Interestingly, the in-hospital mortality of NSTEMI patients has consistently decreased, giving some patients the option to be managed in general hospital wards. The ACTION ICU score has been proposed to identify high-risk patients with NSTEMI and guide the selective risk-based need for ICU care. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of the ACTION ICU score to predict patients' risk of developing complications requiring ICU care in a Latin-American cohort with NSTEMI. METHODS: We applied the ACTION ICU score in a retrospective cohort. A composite primary outcome included: cardiorespiratory arrest, shock, high-grade atrio-ventricular block, respiratory failure, stroke, or death. The predictive performance of this model was estimated with a conditional multivariable logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Of 1,062 patients with NSTEMI, the primary outcome was present in 75 patients (7.1%), and 1,019 (96%) were admitted to ICU. The most common event was respiratory failure (4.0%), followed by cardiogenic shock (3.7%), and cardiac arrest (1.7%). The presence of heart failure signs or symptoms had the highest association with the primary outcome (OR:2.16; 95%CI:1.61-2.92). The best cut-off point for this population was 3 (complications risk: 4.0%, SEN:96%, SP:15.4%, NPV:98.1%, PPV:7.9%). CONCLUSION: The ACTION ICU score may be a promising tool to identify the need for ICU care in Latin-American patients with NSTEMI. Furthermore, additional research is needed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of this strategy.

Long-chain (≥C20 ) polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) are physiologically important fatty acids for most animals, including humans. Although most LC-PUFA production occurs in aquatic primary producers such as microalgae, recent research indicates the ability of certain groups of (mainly marine) invertebrates for endogenous LC-PUFA biosynthesis and/or bioconversion from dietary precursors. The genetic pathways for and mechanisms behind LC-PUFA biosynthesis remain unknown in many invertebrates to date, especially in non-model species. However, the numerous genomic and transcriptomic resources currently available can contribute to our knowledge of the LC-PUFA biosynthetic capabilities of metazoans. Within our previously generated transcriptome of the benthic harpacticoid copepod Platychelipus littoralis, we detected expression of one methyl-end desaturase, one front-end desaturase, and seven elongases, key enzymes responsible for LC-PUFA biosynthesis. To demonstrate their functionality, we characterized eight of them using heterologous expression in yeast. The P. littoralis methyl-end desaturase has Δ15/17/19 desaturation activity, enabling biosynthesis of α-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from 18:2 n-6, 20:4 n-6 and 22:5 n-6, respectively. Its front-end desaturase has Δ4 desaturation activity from 22:5 n-3 to DHA, implying that P. littoralis has multiple pathways to produce this physiologically important fatty acid. All studied P. littoralis elongases possess varying degrees of elongation activity for saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, producing aliphatic hydrocarbon chains with lengths of up to 30 carbons. Our investigation revealed a functionally diverse range of fatty acid biosynthesis genes in copepods, which highlights the need to scrutinize the role that primary consumers could perform in providing essential nutrients to upper trophic levels.

Plastic pollution constitutes an environmental problem in the Canary Islands nowadays. Nevertheless, studies evaluating the impact of plastics on its avifauna are still scarce. Gastrointestinal tracts of 88 birds belonging to 14 species were studied for the presence of plastics. Moreover, their livers were analyzed for the determination of bromodiphenyl ethers (BDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Among Cory's shearwaters (n = 45), the frequency of occurrence of plastic ingestion was considerably high (88.89 %). This species had the highest mean value of items (7.22 ± 5.66) and most of them were compatible with lines derived from fishing gear. PCBs and PAHs were detected in all of the samples and OCPs in the great majority of them (98.86 %). Our results highlight the problems that plastic debris (mainly for seabirds) and organic pollutants pose to these species.

Due to a recent previous surgery, it was decided to perform a percutaneous repair to reduce perioperative risk, under an off-label indication using a device for ventricular septal defect closure, successful and without complications in the follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: There is limited information about the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease in Latin-American countries. Our objective was to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients in Mexico. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a retrospective cohort study with 333 consecutive patients who were admitted to Hospital de Especialidades "Dr. Antonio Fraga Mouret" in Mexico City with COVID-19 between April 1, 2020, and June 30, 2020. Demographic, clinical, laboratory data, treatment details and 30-day outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: The patients studied included 52% men (172/233) and the median age was 45 years. Up to 75% (250/333) of patients were classified as overweight or obese. There were 185 (56%) inpatients; 85% (158/185) were hospitalized in the general ward, and 15% (27/185) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Laboratory measurements showed significant differences between inpatients and outpatients such as lymphocyte-count (median 0.8 vs 1.2×109/L, p < 0.001), LDH (median 650 vs 294 U/L, p < 0.001), CRP (median 147 vs 5 mg/L, p = 0.007), CK-MB (median, 15 vs 10 U/L, p = 0.008), ferritin (median, 860 vs 392 ng/mL, p = 0.02), and D-dimer (median, 780 vs 600 ng/mL, p = 0.15). These differences were seen between survivor and non-survivor patients as well. The rate of death in mechanically ventilated patients was 94% (67/71). Mortality at 30-day follow-up was 57% (105/185). CONCLUSIONS: We observed that majority of the non-survivors were obese and young. Complications leading to death was observed in majority of the cases.

The quality of virgin olive oil (VOO) is largely determined by the technology used in the industrial process of extracting the oil. Technological innovations within this field aim to strike a proper balance between oil yield and the optimal chemical composition of VOO. The application of pulsed electric fields (PEF) that cause the electroporation of the plant cell membranes favors a more efficient breakage of the olive fruit tissue, which in turn could facilitate the extraction of the oil and some of its key minor components. Pilot-scale and industrial extraction tests have been conducted to assess the effect of PEF technology on the oil extraction yield and on the organoleptic and functional quality of VOO. The best results were obtained by combining the PEF treatment (2 kV/cm) with short malaxation times and a low processing temperature. Under these conditions, PEF technology could decisively improve the oil yield by up to 25% under optimal conditions and enhance the incorporation of phenolic and volatile compounds into the oils. The PEF treatment neither affected the physicochemical parameters used to determine the commercial categories of olive oils, nor the tocopherol content. Similarly, the sensory evaluation of the PEF-extracted oils by means of a panel test did not detect the appearance of any defect or off-flavor. In addition, the intensity of positive attributes (fruity, bitter and pungent) was generally higher in PEF oils than in control oils.
